Kebijakan pendidikan di Negara maju telah menghilangkan permainan bebas. Permainan bebas merupakan jenis permainan yang lazim dilakukan anak baik di lingkungan, sekolah dan keluarga. tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mendiskusikan tentang permainan bebas dalam kerangka kebijakan pendidikan. Tulisan ini mengurai dari konsep bermain, permainan bebas sampai beberapa manfaat yang tampak dari beberapa hasil penelitian. Adapun kajian ini dikaitkan dengan beberapa pandangan para ahli sebagai refleksi untuk memformat pelayanan pendidikan anak usia dini yang bermutu. Praktek permainan bebas dalam pendidikan anak usia dini menuai pro dan kontra. Keduanya memiliki argumentasi dalam memahami permainan bebas.Permainan bebas semestinya perlu dipahami secara menyeluruh oleh berbagai pihak seperti keluarga, praktisi dan pembuat kebijakan berkenaan tentang manfaat yang dapat diperoleh bagi anak usia dini.
