Abstract

Cultural Narrative Architecture: Integrative Model of Greimasian Structure, Local Wisdom, and Cultural Memory in the Sundanese Historical Trilogy

Recent scholarship on Indonesian historical fiction has increasingly foregrounded narrative structure as a key mechanism in the construction of cultural memory. This study examines Saini K. M.’s Sundanese historical trilogy by combining Greimasian actantial and functional models with an analytical mapping of local wisdom, resulting in the formulation of a conceptual framework referred to as Cultural Narrative Architecture. Employing a qualitative interpretive approach, the research treats the three novels as a unified narrative continuum. The analysis involves identifying actantial roles—namely subject, object, sender, receiver, helper, and opponent—alongside tracing the functional sequence of contract, competence, enactment, and sanction, as well as delineating domains of local wisdom embedded in narrative progression and character construction. The findings reveal a relatively stable actantial configuration in which leadership values, ancestral remembrance, and political legitimacy emerge as central cultural drivers. The functional development of the narrative indicates a gradual ethical transition from individual-centred leadership towards collective responsibility, while the examination of cultural values highlights four recurring domains: moral integrity, kinship solidarity, cosmological equilibrium, and the continuity of intergenerational memory. It can therefore be concluded that the integration of these analytical dimensions produces a Cultural Narrative Architecture model that elucidates how Sundanese historical fiction structures collective memory and contributes to the formation of cultural identity. From a theoretical standpoint, the study extends narrative theory and cultural memory studies through a locally grounded perspective, while practically providing an analytical tool for incorporating historical fiction into educational practices rooted in local wisdom.
