Abstract
ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze the reasons behind early marriage and its implications for women’s economic independence in Karanganyar Regency during the 2021–2024 period. The research subjects include young married women, their families, and representatives of relevant local institutions. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that emotional factors, cultural traditions, religious values, and economic pressures are the main drivers of early marriage. Such practices negatively affect women by interrupting formal education, limiting access to employment, and increasing financial dependence on their spouses. The lack of access to empowerment programs and weak cross-sectoral coordination further exacerbate the situation, making it difficult for women to achieve economic independence. The study recommends strengthening the program for delaying the age of marriage, providing skills training and business capital support, as well as enhancing institutional collaboration to break the cycle of social and economic vulnerability caused by early marriage.
Keywords: Early marriage; economic independence; education; women’s empowerment.
