Authorship Criteria
Jurnal Studi Hadis Nusantara (JSHN) is committed to maintaining transparency, accountability, fairness, and integrity in scholarly authorship. This policy establishes the criteria for authorship, author contributions, author identity, authorship order, changes in authorship, and the prevention of unethical authorship practices.
This policy applies to all manuscripts submitted to Jurnal Studi Hadis Nusantara.
1. Policy Statement
Authorship represents both scholarly recognition and academic responsibility. Individuals listed as authors must have made substantial intellectual contributions to the research and manuscript and must accept responsibility for the integrity, accuracy, and originality of the published work.
Authorship must be determined by actual scholarly contributions rather than academic rank, institutional position, professional status, seniority, personal relationships, or financial contribution alone.
JSHN follows internationally recognized principles of publication ethics and encourages transparent reporting of individual contributions in accordance with the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).
2. Criteria for Authorship
An individual should be recognized as an author when they have made substantial intellectual contributions to the research and manuscript and are willing to take responsibility for the published work.
The following criteria apply:
2.1. Substantial Intellectual Contribution
Authors must have made a substantial contribution to one or more significant aspects of the research, including:
-
conception or formulation of the research;
-
development of the research design or methodology;
-
collection or acquisition of research materials or data;
-
analysis or interpretation of data;
-
critical examination of primary Hadith sources;
-
analysis of sanad and matn, where relevant;
-
textual, historical, philological, or hermeneutical analysis;
-
interpretation of living Hadith phenomena; or
-
development of relevant theoretical or conceptual frameworks.
For field-based research, substantial contribution may include meaningful participation in interviews, observations, documentation, data analysis, and interpretation.
2.2. Manuscript Preparation and Critical Revision
Authors must participate substantially in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
Activities such as basic proofreading, language correction, formatting, reference management, administrative assistance, or technical support do not independently qualify an individual for authorship.
2.3. Final Approval
All listed authors must review and approve the final version of the manuscript before submission and publication.
Each author must agree to the content of the manuscript and its submission to JSHN.
2.4. Accountability
All authors must accept responsibility for their respective contributions and cooperate appropriately in addressing questions concerning the accuracy, originality, methodology, sources, data, or integrity of the research.
Individuals who contribute to the research but do not meet the journal's authorship criteria should not be listed as authors and may instead be recognized in the Acknowledgements section where appropriate.
3. Authorship in Different Types of Hadith Research
JSHN recognizes that scholarly contributions may differ according to the methodological approach of a manuscript.
For textual, classical, and source-based Hadith research, qualifying contributions may include analysis of primary Hadith collections, sanad and matn analysis, takhrij, textual criticism, historical contextualization, and interpretation of Hadith sources.
For living Hadith and empirical research, qualifying contributions may include research design, fieldwork, interviews, observations, documentation, qualitative or quantitative data analysis, and interpretation of findings.
For hermeneutical, interdisciplinary, and contemporary Hadith research, qualifying contributions may include development of theoretical frameworks, methodological design, interdisciplinary analysis, and interpretation of Hadith in relation to contemporary social, cultural, educational, or religious contexts.
Regardless of methodology, authorship must reflect genuine intellectual contribution to the research and manuscript.
4. Author Identity and Affiliation
All authors must provide accurate and complete identification information during manuscript submission.
The following requirements apply:
-
Full Name: Authors must provide their full names without academic degrees or professional titles.
-
Institutional Affiliation: Each author must provide their current institutional affiliation using the official name of the institution, including city and country.
-
Email Address: Each author must provide a valid academic or professional email address where available.
-
ORCID iD: Authors are strongly encouraged to provide an ORCID iD to support accurate scholarly identification and attribution.
-
Corresponding Author: One author must be designated as the corresponding author and must provide valid contact information for communication with the editorial office.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that all identity and affiliation information is accurate and up to date.
5. Author Order
The order of authors should reflect their relative intellectual and scholarly contributions to the research and manuscript.
The authors should determine and agree upon the order of authors before manuscript submission.
The corresponding author is responsible for confirming that all co-authors have reviewed and agreed to the submitted authorship information and author order.
JSHN does not determine authorship order on the basis of academic rank, institutional authority, seniority, or personal relationships.
Any dispute concerning authorship should first be resolved among the authors. Where necessary, the journal may recommend that the matter be addressed through the relevant institutions.
6. Contributors Who Are Not Authors
Individuals who provide assistance but do not meet the journal's authorship criteria should not be listed as authors.
Where appropriate, such contributions may be recognized in the Acknowledgements section.
Examples may include:
-
administrative assistance;
-
technical assistance;
-
language editing;
-
transcription;
-
data entry;
-
research facilitation;
-
access to research locations or materials;
-
institutional support; and
-
other forms of assistance that do not constitute substantial intellectual contribution.
Authors should obtain permission from individuals before identifying them in the Acknowledgements section.
Acknowledgement must not be used to conceal a substantial intellectual contribution that would qualify an individual for authorship.
7. Prohibited Authorship Practices
JSHN does not permit authorship practices that misrepresent individual scholarly contributions.
The following practices are considered unethical:
7.1. Gift or Honorary Authorship
Listing an individual as an author because of academic status, institutional position, seniority, personal relationship, gratitude, or prestige despite the absence of a qualifying intellectual contribution.
7.2. Guest Authorship
Including a prominent academic or researcher as an author primarily to increase the perceived credibility, visibility, or acceptance prospects of a manuscript without a corresponding scholarly contribution.
7.3. Ghost Authorship
Excluding an individual who has made a substantial intellectual contribution to the research or manuscript from the author list.
7.4. Authorship Manipulation
Adding, removing, or rearranging authors for inappropriate reasons, including institutional pressure, personal advantage, academic hierarchy, or attempts to influence the editorial process.
Suspected authorship violations may be investigated in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics and applicable publication-ethics guidance.
Depending on the circumstances, editorial actions may include requests for clarification, correction of the authorship record, rejection of the manuscript, notification of the relevant institution, or other appropriate measures.
8. Changes to the List of Authors
Requests to add, remove, or rearrange authors after manuscript submission must be submitted formally to the editorial office.
Such requests should include:
-
A clear written explanation of the reason for the proposed change;
-
Written agreement from all existing authors;
-
Written consent from any individual being added or removed; and
-
An updated description of author contributions, where applicable.
The Editor-in-Chief or designated editor may request additional information or documentation before considering the request.
Authorship changes will not normally be approved when there is an unresolved dispute among authors or insufficient evidence supporting the proposed change.
Requests for authorship changes after publication will be considered in accordance with applicable publication-ethics principles and may require a formal correction or other editorial notice.
9. Author Contribution Statement
JSHN encourages authors to provide a transparent statement describing the specific contributions of each author.
The journal encourages the use of the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), where appropriate.
Relevant contribution categories may include:
-
Conceptualization;
-
Methodology;
-
Investigation;
-
Formal analysis;
-
Data curation;
-
Resources;
-
Writing – original draft;
-
Writing – review and editing;
-
Validation;
-
Supervision;
-
Project administration; and
-
Funding acquisition.
An author contribution statement may be presented in the following format:
Authors' Contributions:
Author 1: Conceptualization, methodology, investigation, formal analysis, and writing – original draft.
Author 2: Investigation, data curation, analysis, and writing – review and editing.
Author 3: Supervision, validation, and critical revision of the manuscript.
The contribution statement must accurately represent the actual contributions of each author.
A contribution statement does not replace the requirement that every listed author meet the journal's authorship standards.
10. Editors, Editorial Board Members, and Reviewers as Authors
Editors, Editorial Board members, and peer reviewers of JSHN may submit manuscripts to the journal.
However, their editorial or reviewing position must not provide any preferential treatment.
The following principles apply:
-
Manuscripts submitted by editors or Editorial Board members must undergo the same academic and peer-review standards applicable to other submissions.
-
An editor who is an author or co-author of a manuscript must not participate in the editorial evaluation or publication decision concerning that manuscript.
-
Such manuscripts should be assigned to an independent editor who has no relevant conflict of interest.
-
Peer reviewers must disclose any personal, professional, institutional, or other conflict of interest.
-
Individuals with a relevant conflict of interest must not participate in the review or editorial decision for the manuscript.
Editorial position, institutional affiliation, or professional status must not influence the publication decision.
11. Artificial Intelligence and Authorship
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, including generative AI tools and large language models, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JSHN.
AI systems cannot independently assume responsibility for the integrity of scholarly research, approve the final manuscript, disclose conflicts of interest, or fulfill the accountability requirements of authorship.
Human authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, reliability, and integrity of all submitted content, including content produced or modified with the assistance of AI tools.
Where the use of AI tools makes a substantive contribution to manuscript preparation, authors should disclose the use of such tools in accordance with the journal's applicable Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI Policy.
Authors remain responsible for verifying AI-assisted content, particularly:
-
Hadith quotations and references;
-
Arabic texts and translations;
-
sanad and matn information;
-
historical claims;
-
scholarly interpretations;
-
citations and bibliographic information; and
-
factual or methodological statements.
AI assistance does not exempt authors from compliance with the journal's policies concerning plagiarism, research integrity, citation accuracy, confidentiality, data protection, and publication ethics.
12. Research Data and Scholarly Responsibility
Authors are responsible for ensuring that the research materials, sources, data, interpretations, and arguments presented in their manuscripts are accurate and appropriately documented.
Where research involves interviews, observations, field documentation, or other empirical materials, authors should ensure that the research was conducted in accordance with applicable ethical standards and that the rights and confidentiality of research participants are appropriately protected.
Authors must be able to provide reasonable clarification or supporting information concerning their research when requested by the editorial team.
