Manuscript Types

Jurnal Studi Hadis Nusantara (JSHN) welcomes original scholarly manuscripts that contribute to the development of Hadith Studies and related fields. The journal encourages manuscripts employing textual, historical, philological, hermeneutical, empirical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Hadith.

JSHN considers manuscripts that demonstrate originality, scholarly significance, methodological clarity, and substantial engagement with relevant primary and secondary sources.

The journal considers the following types of manuscripts:

1. Original Research Articles

Original Research Articles present original findings, arguments, interpretations, or theoretical contributions resulting from systematic scholarly research in Hadith Studies.

These manuscripts may examine classical or contemporary Hadith scholarship, sanad and matn studies, Hadith interpretation, Hadith criticism, Hadith transmission, textual studies, historical development, or other relevant issues.

Research may employ textual, historical, philological, hermeneutical, empirical, or interdisciplinary approaches, provided that the methodology is clearly explained and appropriately applied.

2. Living Hadith Research

Living Hadith manuscripts examine the ways in which Hadith is understood, practiced, interpreted, transmitted, and expressed within contemporary Muslim communities and social contexts.

Studies may address religious practices, traditions, rituals, educational activities, social behavior, cultural expressions, digital practices, or other phenomena associated with the reception and implementation of Hadith in everyday life.

Empirical studies should clearly describe the research setting, participants or sources, data collection procedures, analytical approach, and ethical considerations where applicable.

3. Review Articles

Review Articles provide critical, systematic, and analytical evaluations of existing scholarly literature in Hadith Studies.

These manuscripts may review developments in Hadith scholarship, methodological debates, contemporary Hadith research, specific theoretical approaches, thematic studies, or significant developments in the field.

A review article should go beyond merely summarizing previous publications. It should synthesize existing scholarship, identify patterns and debates, evaluate methodological or theoretical developments, and identify relevant research gaps or future directions.

4. Conceptual and Theoretical Articles

Conceptual and Theoretical Articles develop, critically examine, refine, or reconstruct concepts, theories, methodologies, or analytical frameworks relevant to Hadith Studies.

Such manuscripts may address issues including Hadith epistemology, contemporary Hadith methodology, hermeneutics, theories of interpretation, approaches to sanad and matn criticism, the relationship between Hadith and social sciences, or other theoretical developments in the discipline.

The manuscript must provide a clear conceptual argument and demonstrate its significance for the advancement of Hadith Studies.

5. Textual, Sanad, and Matn Studies

JSHN welcomes scholarly manuscripts focusing specifically on the critical study of Hadith texts and transmission.

Such research may include:

  • Takhrij al-Hadith;

  • Sanad criticism;

  • Matn criticism;

  • Hadith authentication;

  • Comparative analysis of Hadith narrations;

  • Analysis of Hadith variants and transmissions;

  • Study of classical Hadith collections;

  • Hadith terminology and methodology;

  • Manuscript and textual studies; and

  • Historical analysis of Hadith transmission.

Manuscripts in this category should clearly identify their primary sources and demonstrate an appropriate methodological basis for textual or transmission analysis.

6. Hermeneutical and Interpretive Studies

Hermeneutical and Interpretive Studies examine the interpretation and contextualization of Hadith using established approaches in Hadith scholarship and relevant contemporary methodologies.

Manuscripts may examine classical and contemporary interpretations, contextual approaches, linguistic analysis, historical contextualization, interdisciplinary hermeneutics, or the relationship between Hadith texts and contemporary social, ethical, educational, and religious issues.

Authors should clearly explain the interpretive framework employed and demonstrate how the framework contributes to the analysis.

7. Comparative and Interdisciplinary Studies

Comparative and Interdisciplinary Studies examine Hadith through dialogue with other intellectual traditions, disciplines, methodologies, or fields of inquiry.

Relevant approaches may involve Islamic studies, Qur'anic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, history, sociology, anthropology, education, communication, digital humanities, religious studies, philosophy, linguistics, or other relevant disciplines.

Comparative studies may also examine differences and relationships between classical and contemporary Hadith scholarship, different interpretive traditions, or Hadith scholarship across geographical and intellectual contexts.

Interdisciplinary manuscripts must maintain a clear connection to Hadith Studies and demonstrate meaningful integration between the disciplines involved.

8. Contemporary and Digital Hadith Studies

JSHN welcomes research addressing the development and reception of Hadith in contemporary and digital environments.

Potential topics include Hadith dissemination through social media, digital Hadith platforms, online religious discourse, digital scholarship, Hadith literacy, contemporary Hadith interpretation, algorithmic or technological mediation of religious knowledge, and other emerging issues related to Hadith in the digital era.

Such manuscripts should demonstrate clear scholarly methodology and critically evaluate the implications of contemporary or technological developments for Hadith scholarship and Muslim communities.

9. Case and Contextual Studies

Case and Contextual Studies examine specific phenomena, communities, institutions, intellectual traditions, texts, practices, or contemporary developments relevant to Hadith Studies.

The manuscript should provide a sufficiently rigorous analysis of the selected case and demonstrate its broader scholarly significance.

A case study should not be limited to descriptive reporting but should establish a clear analytical argument and explain its implications for the wider field of Hadith Studies.

10. Manuscript Requirements

Regardless of manuscript type, all submissions to JSHN must:

  1. Present original and academically significant research or analysis;

  2. Demonstrate a clear research problem, argument, or scholarly objective;

  3. Employ an appropriate and clearly explained methodology;

  4. Engage critically with relevant primary and secondary sources;

  5. Demonstrate appropriate use and interpretation of Hadith sources;

  6. Provide accurate citations and bibliographic information;

  7. Meet applicable standards of academic integrity and publication ethics; and

  8. Follow the journal's Author Guidelines and formatting requirements.

For manuscripts involving classical Hadith sources, authors are expected to provide sufficient bibliographic and methodological information to enable scholarly verification of the sources and arguments presented.
